Joanne Zumbrun Lives Forever on at The Heritage Society
(Monday, July 9, 2025) The Heritage Society lost one of its brightest lights on Monday evening, and we will forever carry the warmth and generosity Joanne Zumbrun shared with us all. Joanne was more than a guardian of history—she was a steady hand in times of need, and a dear friend to so many. She served in many roles such as Tour Docent, Collections Committee Chair, Treasurer, and Vice President.
Through her passion for collections and education, she made history come alive for visitors and students alike. She stepped in without hesitation, offering her time, expertise, and kindness to ensure that each tour was meaningful, each artifact cared for, and each moment preserved. She understood that history is not just a record—it’s a story passed through hands and hearts, and she dedicated herself to keeping those stories vibrant.
Joanne was a cornerstone of The Heritage Society’s most cherished traditions, particularly the Annual Candlelight Tours. She threw herself into reenactments, decorations, and the immersive historical experiences that brought the past to life. Whether she was preparing exhibits, guiding visitors, or ensuring every detail reflected authenticity, she infused these events with a spirit of celebration and reverence for the past.
Her contributions extended beyond day-to-day engagement—Joanne played a critical role in preserving our institutional legacy, spearheading efforts for the 70th anniversary collection. Her deep knowledge made her invaluable in curating exhibits, ensuring that milestones of our history were honored and remembered. She was a *walking encyclopedia* of The Heritage Society, a person we all turned to for insight, accuracy, and storytelling that made history feel alive.
Joanne was also a mentor, eagerly working with students and interns, shaping the next generation of historians and preservationists. She generously shared her wisdom, guiding young scholars as they developed a passion for historical interpretation and museum work. Many of us can trace moments of growth, inspiration, and learning back to her patient and dedicated leadership.
Her commitment to The Heritage Society wasn’t only in words and actions—it was also in sacrifice. She served in several executive positions, helping to steer our organization through challenges and triumphs alike. And when times were tough, she personally financed our work, ensuring that history could continue to be preserved and shared. Her generosity wasn’t just financial—it was rooted in a belief that The Heritage Society was worth saving and strengthening, because she knew the profound value of the stories we safeguard.
Even in her final days, Joanne was surrounded by the love of staff and friends who cherished her. Thank you to everyone who visited her home, offering comfort and companionship during her last health challenge. She knew she was loved, and that love was well-earned through a life of kindness, dedication, and unwavering support.
We will always remember Joanne at her best, because she *was* the best—thoughtful, resilient, youthful, and endlessly giving. Though we say goodbye, her legacy endures in the historic spaces she shaped, the lives she touched, and the stories she safeguarded. Let us honor her memory by carrying forward the same passion and generosity she gave to us all.
Rest well, Joanne. You will always be family to us. HERE
