REMEMBERING JANICE S. MCNAIR
1936-2026
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Janice McNair. Janice’s steadfast support for Houston’s cultural life strengthened Sam Houston Park in ways that will be felt for generations.
She and her family attended our fundraisers. Her last attendance with her family was at our Houston Heritage Luncheon in 2018. It was a treasured moment for our organization.
We are especially grateful for the McNair Foundation’s leadership as the lead donor for the mural Mexican‑American History & Culture in 20th Century Houston, created by artists Laura López Cano and Jesse Sifuentes, which stands proudly in Connally Plaza as a celebration of Houston’s Mexican‑American heritage.
Janice — together with Richard Flowers — conceived and led the Connally Plaza brick campaign, and they chaired the event that unveiled the statue of Governor John B. Connally. Their family’s commemorative bricks now grace the entrance area to our museum gallery, a visible and lasting testament to their belief in place, memory, and community.
We are honored that Janice stood with The Heritage Society. Her generosity saved more than buildings; it preserved stories, identity, and a welcoming space where families and students learn about Houston’s past. Her legacy will live on in every restored home, every school visit, every mural panel, and every gathering in Connally Plaza.
