It all started when…

Did you know that for a brief period in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the immediate surroundings of THS were the City’s first zoo? It started somewhat organically when Houstonians began donating animals to populate their new city park. Animals included a pair of wolves named King and Queen, Mexican eagles, rabbits, a great horned owl, prairie dogs, raccoons, capuchin monkeys, an alligator, a few jaguars, and even a black bear cub.

Over the years, The Heritage Society has fostered several cats and is kind to a possum who makes appearances at Connally Plaza and Jane Ellen's Tree. We also had the pleasure of supporting Barrio Dogs, an organization that works non-stop to find good homes, care for, and educate East Downtown Houston about pets. We also promote the “Lights Out Texas” movement for bird migrations.

We would like to thank those who have taken care of the animals at the park, fed them every day, and given them medical care. We especially want to thank our cat adopters like long-time member Joanne Z. and another volunteer.

We still have some more friendly kitties who need homes. If you can help, please call 713-655-1912 and ask for Alison. Thank you in advance for your support and for being kind to animals. #adoptdontshop #cats #catsofinstagram
