Gregorio Esparza was a Tejano-A Texan of Mexican heritage-who chose to fight for Texas’ independence in the Alamo. Not even two hundred mem were in the Alamo when General Santa Anna surrounded it with more than two thousand soldiers. The Texans’ only choices were to surrender or fight. Gregorio joined the Alamo defenders in a fight to protect the rights of the land he loved. By the end of the battle, all the defenders had died. Because his brother remained loyal to the Mexican cause, Gregorio was the only Alamo defender to receive a burial. Gregorio chose to fight for Texas’ freedom, and he chose to die defending it. His willingness to fight for independence is an inspiration that crosses all borders and will motivate anyone who reads his story to stand up for freedom.
