Color was one of the most dominant and artistic elements used in mapmaking. Prior to the advent of chromolithography in the mid-19th century, all maps were printed in a black and white format and the color was added after production by a colorist.
This is one of two maps that are from the same De Jode Atlas dated 1593. The focus of the maps is the search for a northwest passage to China as optimistically pictured. The insets depicting Indians are based on the unsuccessful French Colony in the 1560s and the unsuccessful English colony in 1580s. In 1593 there were no permanent settlements by the English, French or Dutch in North America. The only settlement in what is now the United States was Spanish.
