The Heritage Society's children's tours bring Texas history to life! On a guided tour, students can visit select historic buildings and The Heritage Society museum gallery and can tour the Duncan Store, a hands-on exhibit for children of all ages. Each tour is designed to enhance the social studies curriculum and TEKS of the Texas public school system.

John P. McGovern Heritage Journey Tour
Third and fourth-grade students visit Old Place, St. John Church, the Staiti House and the Duncan Store.

Third Grade: Learn about how the early settlers in Texas embarked on journeys that led to the formation of new communities. From Austin's colonists to German immigrants to to the early 20th century, this tour explores the early communities of the Houston area.

Fourth Grade: Examine the history of Texas from the days of the Austin Colony to the early 20th century by stepping back in time at The Heritage Society.

John P. McGovern Heritage Discovery Tour
This tour, designed for seventh graders, focuses on Texas history from the days of early statehood to the oil boom era. Students visit the 1847 Kellum-Noble House, a plantation-style home; the 1868 San Felipe Cottage, a German immigrant home; the 1905 Staiti House, owned by an oil pioneer; and the Duncan Store from Egypt, Texas.

Boy Scout Tours
Texas Badge/Texas Award
Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts can explore the history of the state of Texas. Tour Old Place and learn about life in Austin's Colony. Visit the Duncan General Store and learn about 19th century commerce and play with old-fashioned toys. Tour St. John Church and learn about German immigrationinto the state of Texas. Visit the 1905 Staiti House and learn how 20th century technology improved family life.

Tour Reservations:

Admission fee for children's group tours is $4 per child and $5 per adult chaperone. Special discounts may be available, call for more information.

A $20.00 refundable deposit is required to reserve the date. 

Children's groups are divided into groups of 10-15 students. One adult chaperone is required for every ten students.

School tours start promptly at 10:00 a.m. and are offered Thursday through Friday. Scout tours are available on the weekend and start promptly when scheduled. All tours last approximately 1 ½ hours Groups arriving late may be subject to abbreviated or canceled tours.

Prohibited items: 
Food, drink, strollers, backpacks and large bags are not allowed in the historic buildings; these items must be left in the museum gallery.
