School & Scout Tours


The Heritage Society's children's tours bring Texas history to life! On a guided tour, students can visit select historic structures and the Heritage Society museum gallery and can tour the Duncan Store, a hands-on exhibit for children of all ages. Each tour is designed to enhance the social studies curriculum and TEKS of the Texas public school system.

John P. McGovern Heritage Journey Tour
Third- and fourth-grade students visit Old Place, St. John Church, the Yates House and the Duncan Store.

Third Grade: Learn about how the early settlers in Texas embarked on journeys that led to the formation of new communities. From Austin's colonists to German immigrants to freed slaves, this tour explores the early communities of the Houston area.

Fourth Grade: Examine the history of Texas from the days of the Austin Colony to the Reconstruction era by stepping back in time at The Heritage Society.

John P. McGovern Heritage Discovery Tour
This tour, designed for seventh graders, focuses on Texas history from the days of early statehood to the oil boom era. Students visit the 1847 Kellum-Noble House, a plantation-style home; the Yates House, built in 1870 by freed slaves; the 1905 Staiti House, owned by an oil pioneer; and the Duncan Store from Egypt, Texa

Scouts tour San Felipe Cottage, the Kellum-Noble House, the museum gallery, and the Duncan Store.

Girl Scout Tours
Local Lore Badge
Junior Girl Scouts can explore the history of Houston as they work toward completing their Local Lore Badge. A tour includes a visit to San Felipe Cottage, the Kellum-Noble House, the museum and the Duncan Store with a hands-on exhibit. Scouts learn new information about Houston legends and monuments and examine the architectural features of structures built between 1823 and 1905.

Toy Maker and Folk Arts Badge
Come visit The Heritage Society museum gallery during the Christmas season to see our extensive collection of antique toys and investigate the history of playthings.

Boy Scout Tours
Texas Badge/Texas Award
Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts can explore the history of the state of Texas. Tour San Felipe Cottage and learn about German immigration into the state of Texas. Choose a famous Texas, perhaps Sam Houston, and discover more about him at the Kellum-Noble House. You'll also be able to learn about what Texas was like as a new state. Use reproduction tools and play with old-fashioned toys in the Duncan Store, an activity room for children.

Planning your Tour
Tour Reservations:
Reservations are required for all tours. Tours are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to a maximum of 45 students. For tour information and reservations, please contact The Heritage Society at 713.655.1912, ext. 101

Admission:
For 2005, admission is free for children's group tours!

Chaperones are free up to one per ten children. Additional chaperones are $3.00 each.

A $20.00 deposit is required to reserve the date. Reservations without a deposit are not guaranteed.

Chaperones:
Children's groups are divided into groups of 10-15 students. One chaperone is required for every ten students.

Arrival:
School tours start promptly at 10:00 a.m. and are offered Tuesday through Friday. Scout tours are available on the weekend and start promptly when scheduled. All tours last approximately 1 ½ hours Groups arriving late may be subject to abbreviated or canceled tours.
