Outreach

The Heritage Society currently offers eleven community outreach programs to the public. These include nine slide presentations for adults and two traveling trunk presentations for children. The average time for the slide presentation is 45 minutes. These programs are presented at the location of your choice for a fee of $50.00 for each show. Mileage fees may apply. Programs are presented by members of The Heritage Society's Outreach Committee.

Texas/Houston History

  • 170 Years of Houston History traces the history of Houston from the Austin Colony to the present. (May be adapted for younger audiences.)

  • Texas and Houston History examines a broader scope of history, including concurrent historic events in the world, country, state, and city. Note: This will cover some of the same topics as the 170 Years presentation but is a much more in-depth program that lasts one hour and 45 minutes.

Biographies

  • Sam and Margaret Houston, Their Life Together traces the lives of these famous Texans from their marriage in 1840 until their deaths. (May be adapted for younger audiences.)

  • Families of the Park explores the lives of the individuals who lived in the historic structures in Sam Houston Park and their contributions to Houston.

  • Reverend Jack Yates examines the life of this former slave who found prosperity in Houston and was a respected educator and clergyman in the late 1800s. (May be adapted for younger audiences.)

  • Staiti House and Gardens focuses on the life and times of Henry Staiti, a pioneer oil operator. His "suburban" gardens were some of the earliest professional landscapes in Houston.

  • The Covington Place takes us into the home of one of Houston's most prominent African-American families of the early twentieth century. Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Covington entertained famous dignitaries and supported many of Houston's civic and charitable causes. (May be adapted for younger audiences.)

Lifestyles and Traditions

  • Steeples and Stained Glass follows the development of religious groups in Houston through architecture and congregational history.

  • Christmas in the Park provides a view of Sam Houston Park decorated for Christmas and Candlelight; the eight structures are in holiday dress, reflecting period styles and customs.

Traveling Trunk Shows
The Heritage Society offers two traveling trunk shows as part of our Community Outreach Program. These programs are popular with schoolchildren and scout groups. Each trunk shows lasts about 50 minutes and costs $50.00 per show. Mileage fees may apply. Shows are presented by our dedicated volunteers.

Pioneer Trunk Show
Texas history comes to life with The Heritage Society's Pioneer Trunk Show. Our frontier-clad presenter brings the show to your location. Children learn about the past through three-dimensional historical objects, such as early candle molds and corn husk dolls. This unique learning experience is suited for children ages 8-12 and ties in perfectly with the Texas history curriculum.

Great Gizmos Show
Early folk toys come to life with The Heritage Society's Great Gizmos Show. Our presenter brings the show to your location. Students learn about toys that children played with in previous centuries. Some of the toys in the traveling trunk include bilbo-catchers, spinning tops, jacks, and corn husk dolls. This unique learning experience is suited for children ages 5-9 and ties in perfectly with the Texas social studies curriculum.
